England and Wales Pitted Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Group Draws

Ireland and Scotland also share a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
