Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
